About

Built in 1942, the marine terminal is about 600 feet north of East Third and Harbor streets. In the heyday of Camp Stoneman, it served as a launching site for troops deploying to the Pacific Theater of Operations. Soldiers from Camp Stoneman would board ferries at the Pittsburg waterfront, which would carry them to San Francisco’s Fort Mason to war-bound ships.

Four years ago, Tesoro donated a former military depot sign, dating back from the days of Pittsburg’s Camp Stoneman, to the Pittsburg Historical Society Museum. The sign, which had stood at the entrance to the dock read: “Through this sign pass the best damn soldiers in the world.”
